Christmas in Poland

In Poland Christmas is one of the biggest holidays. It is celebrated on December 24th. To bring hapiness for the next year the first person to visit home should be male. After many preparations whole family gathers at one table to celebrate the birth of Christ. Women cook all kinds of traditional dishes, children decorate the Christmas tree brought by the men. When the first star appears in the sky, family members share sacramental bread, eat 12 dishes supper. One of the most important dishes is "barszcz" (beetroot soup) and it's obligatory to have. The barszcz may be eaten with "uszka" (little dumplings with mushrooms) or "krokiety" (pancakes with mushrooms or/and cabbage, in breadcrumbs, fried on oil or butter). Carp is the main dish of the meal. The fish itself is traditionally bought a few days earlier alive and it swims in the bath until it's killed by the man of the house! The carp's scales are said to bring luck and fortune and by some are kept for the whole year. Evening ends with singing Christmas carols and unpacking presents.
